The Cougars have officially ended their season after taking a loss against Belmont in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championships.
The team, which was seeded eighth going into postseason play, battled against top-ranked Belmont and led early in the game. However, a 14-2 run from the Bruins allowed them to pull ahead in the first half, and they never trailed again.
Belmont led 43-30 at halftime, and the Cougars could not overcome the double-digit gap. A 10-0 Bruin run in the second half allowed Belmont to pull further ahead, resulting in a final score of 78-61.
Senior guard Iziah James led for the Cougars with 18 points. This was a career-high for James and also placed him within one point of SIUE’s record for the OVC tournament. Senior guard Mike Adewunmi led on the defensive end with 6 rebounds, and he also added 16 points to the scoreboard for the Cougars. Sophomore forward Lamar Wright picked up seven blocks — just one short of SIUE’s single-game record.
The Cougars ended the season with an overall record of 9-17 and a conference record of 7-12.
