Bill Plaschke, an SIUE alumnus who graduated in 1980, has been awarded his eighth AP Sports Columnist of the Year award.

In 1996, Plaschke was hired on as a sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times. He worked his way from being a small midwest college graduate to one of the most recognized names in sports writing. He is also a regular on the show “Around the Horn,” a daily sports talk show on ESPN.

On top of being a celebrated sports columnist, Plaschke has also written several books throughout his career, one of which is titled “Hard Knox: The Life of an NFL Coach,” a biography on the life of three-time AP NFL Coach of the Year Chuck Knox.

When Plaschke is not on television or writing, he spends his time helping the community.

He has been named Man of the Year by the Los Angeles Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and has received a Pursuit of Justice Award from the California Women’s Law Center, according to the Los Angeles Times.
