Baseball takes first home loss to Western Illinois

Junior Brett Johnson Joliet, Illinois, readies himself to slam the ball before he makes a play.

Despite an early lead, the Cougars took their first home loss of the season with an 18-11 defeat to Western Illinois.

The Cougars came out with a 4-0 lead in the first inning where senior first baseman Ole Arntson from Gresham, Oregon, drove home the first run on a fielder’s choice. This was followed by a single from sophomore first baseman Brennan Orf from Wildwood, Missouri, that added two runs. The final run of the inning was brought by senior catcher Steven Pattan from Godfrey, Illinois.

The Leathernecks came back at the top of the third inning, scoring seven runs before the Cougars tied the score in the bottom through an RBI-hit by sophomore infielder Drew Mize from Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, and a two-run hit by junior infielder/outfielder Brett Johnson from Joliet, Illinois.

Coming out of the fifth inning, the Leathernecks pulled ahead with a 12-7 lead. Johnson hit a single, which added one run for SIUE in the bottom of the fifth. Head Coach Sean Lyons said this was a tough score to come back from.

“We'd given up 12 runs in the first five innings,” Lyons said. “It was hard to overcome. We need to get to work and find a way to be better in these midweek games.”

The sixth inning saw two runs in the top from the Leathernecks and three in the bottom from sophomore outfielder Avery Owusu-Asiedu from Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Orf, bringing the score to 14-11.

Western Illinois scored the last four runs of the game in the eighth inning, bringing them the win.

Overall, the Cougars outhit the Leathernecks 14-13 in the game. Lyons said they need to build on the positives coming from their performance as they move forward.

“We scored some runs and we hit some barrels,” Lyons said. “We need to keep at it and move on from today and get better for the future.”

Following three consecutive wins in a series against Oakland earlier in the week and this loss, the Cougars are 7-1 at home and 9-16 overall.

SIUE will play next at 6:00 p.m. on March 25 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, against Southeast Missouri.
