The SIU School of Dental Medicine graduated 58 students who completed their doctor of dental medicine degrees on Saturday, June 1.

SIUE alumnus Danny Savoca said the graduates were not only ambassadors for the dental profession but also for the school, and suggested ways for them to support both going forward.

Savoca was hired as an assistant professor at SIUE in 1976 and later earned a master’s in educational administration from SIUE. He also served as head of operative dentistry and assistant dean for clinical affairs. Savoca retired in 2006, but remains a member of the SIU School of Dental Medicine Dean Bruce Rotter’s advisory board.

“This is the beginning of a new day,” Rotter said to the class. “You have been given this day to use as you will. You can waste it or use it for good. What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever. In its place is something you have left behind. Let it be something good.”
