Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Chancellor Carlo Montemagno died early morning Thursday, Oct. 11. His death was announced on Facebook by Interim SIU System president Kevin Dorsey.

In June, Montemagno announced he had been diagnosed with cancer, however Dorsey did not disclose what caused the chancellor’s death.

I am deeply sorry to inform you of the passing of SIU Carbondale Chancellor Carlo Montemagno earlier this morning,” Dorsey wrote. “Dr. Montemagno was a visionary who worked tirelessly to advance SIU Carbondale since he joined the campus as chancellor in August 2017.”

Dorsey went on to state that the loss would be deeply felt at SIU, and any information regarding honoring the chancellor will be first consulted with his wife, Pam and the rest of his family. Dorsey also said he asked the board of trustees to hold a special meeting to appoint an interim chancellor. Until then, Dorsey will work directly with SIUC leadership.

The Alestle will continue to update as more information becomes available.
