BREAKING: Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt announces retirement after 30 years at SIUE

Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt will retire on June 30, 2019 after 30 years with the university.

First hired in 1989, SIUE Athletics announced Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt will be retiring this year, effective June 30, 2019.

Hewitt has served as director since 2002. Before that, he spent 13 years in various administrative roles after coming to the university as Assistant Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Hewitt oversaw Athletics’ transition from Division II to Division I competition in 2012. He also was part of the decision to eliminate men’s tennis and women’s golf during the state budget crisis in 2016.

Chancellor Randy Pembrook said the university will immediately begin a nationwide search for Hewitt’s replacement, according to SIUE Athletics.

Athletic Communications Director Eric Hess, who has worked in the Athletics department for 28 years himself, did not have information at this time if an interim director would be named between Hewitt’s final day and the appointment of his official replacement.

“I remember when he started. I watched him evolve in his job and all the things he’s done at the university. It’s been a very exciting ride to watch that whole thing. What the future holds is certainly up to the university,” Hess said.

Hewitt has not immediately responded to a request for comment. The Alestle will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
