Sophomore Adam O'Reilly was excited to start the new school year enjoying the college life.
"I'm looking forward to meeting new people and moving into my new apartment in Cougar Village," O'Reilly said.
O'Reilly said he plans to check out all SIUE has to offer by taking advantage of some of the Cougar Welcome 2008 events.
Cougar Welcome 2008 is a schedule of events sponsored by the Campus Activities Board and Kimmel Leadership Center.
According to Cheryl Heard, assistant director of the Kimmel Leadership Center, the goal for Cougar Welcome 2008 is to introduce students to involvement opportunities on campus and welcome new and returning students to SIUE.
"It serves as a kickoff to the new academic year," Heard said.
During Cougar Welcome 2008, students can learn about all the programs and services SIUE has to offer. There will be booths set up in the Goshen Lounge in the Morris University Center displaying many of the different student organizations on campus. There are also numerous activities planned for the students to become familiar with the campus and to meet fellow students. Some of the activities include ice cream socials, recreation days and live music.
"It's the funnest two weeks of the year," senior political science major Kyle Worman of Altamont said.
Freshman and pre-pharmacy major Kayla Graham of O'Fallon, Mo. said she hopes to meet a lot of people this year and hopefully join a sorority.
According to Heard, during Cougar Welcome 2008, students will be able to see new things, have fun and snag a free welcome T-shirt.
"I invite everyone to come out in the two weeks and enjoy what we have been working hard planning all summer for, the start of the school year," Heard said.
Cougar Welcome began Monday and will continue until Sept. 6. For more information about Cougar Welcome 2008, contact the Kimmel Leadership Center at 650-2686 or go to www.siue.edu/cab.
