Freshman biology major Mark Schmidt of Godfrey also moved into 1-West on Friday and was on his own by noon.

Schmidt said while friends had calmed his nerves about the first day, he still had worries.

"First days can make or break you," Schmidt said. "You don't know what kind of people you'll see or how they'll see you."

One of Schmidt's early worries was his new roommate, but Schmidt had met him earlier on in the summer.

"We have the same likes and dislikes," Schmidt said. "I think we'll work out well as roommates."

Schmidt said his new Resident Assistant, sophomore English major Timothy Chapman of Salem, eased the move-in process for 1-West.

Chapman said he was in the same boat as many of his residents, having moved into Bluff Hall only a few weeks earlier and still wasn't used to his new RA position.

"They trained me for enough scenarios that I feel prepared, but there is still variables," Chapman said. "I'm still a little nervous."

Chapman said many freshmen are worried about their new roommates.

"Everyone has these pre-conceived notions, but then you find out that what you expected usually is false," Chapman said.

The Honors Scholars' Wing is the smallest Focused Interest Community in Bluff, Chapman said, making for a small but diverse wing.

"The smaller wing should be easier to keep control and get to know the residents," Chapman said. "There's a spectrum of people, but it seems like everyone will get along."

Freshman physics and engineering major Cody Dirks of Petersburg said he was eager to move out and settle into his new dorm room.

"I'd been here a couple times, so I wasn't worried at all," Dirks said. "I liked the small campus feel from the beginning."

Dirks said with his new campus, new roommate and 19-credit-hour semester schedule, he would have his work cut out for him.

"I'm just going to take it as I go," Dirks said.
