The back of the CD cover shows a beautiful woman posing with two trombones. Two men wearing suits, ties and glasses stand behind her, looking shocked. As jazz musicians, they clearly aren't used to attention like this.

It is the cover of music professor Brett Stamps's newest CD, released at the beginning of July. The name of the CD is "Bad to the Bone," and it features Stamps and SIUE alumnus Jim Owens, both trombone players, playing songs they specially arranged for the album.

"It's basically a CD for jazz trombones in rhythm," Stamps said. "It seems to be pretty popular. It turned out really good."

The CD includes a new twist on the John Lennon/ Paul McCartney song, "Blackbird."

"It's a fun, different piece," Stamps said. "Jim (Owens) said it would make John Lennon roll over in his grave to hear his song played like that, but I think he was kidding."

The idea for the CD cover was inspired by a Rolling Stone magazine cover showing Kid Rock surrounded by beautiful women.

"It's kind of a tongue in cheek thing of rock music … jazz doesn't have quite the same appeal," Stamps said. "It's supposed to be funny, but my wife doesn't think so."

To help create the cover, a model was flown in from Los Angeles to pose with Stamps and Owens. The inside CD jackets shows more shots of the model posing with Owens and Stamps and their trombones.

The CD also features performances by music professor Rick Haydon, who released a CD with Stamps last year called "In Your Own Sweet Way". Although Haydon didn't have time

to help produce "Bad to the Bone,"

he played guitar in five of the

13 songs.

"I think it's a big undertaking," Haydon said. "It's difficult with the arranging of and getting music for trombones. I think they did a nice job with the picking of music and showcasing their talent … I thought the playing was really good."

Many other SIUE talents are featured on this album including graduate student Cody Henry on trombone and music professor Reggie Thomas on piano.

Thomas, along with Haydon and music instructor Andy Tichenor, is also hoping to put out a CD later this year. The CD will be produced by Victoria Records in St. Louis, the same record company that produced "In Your Own Sweet Way" and "Bad to the Bone."

Haydon said the executive producer of Victoria Records, Bill Becker, has been a big help to the SIUE Music Department.

"He is very supportive," Haydon said. "He helps us get (the CDs) out there and is supportive of anything coming out of SIUE."

Stamps said a CD release party is planned for Sept. 9 at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis.
