The residents of a 500-side Cougar Village apartment continue to face criminal problems, following a string of crimes including burglary, theft and multiple cases of criminal damage to property.
SIUE Police Lt. Kevin Schmoll said because of the extensive list of problems at the apartment, police recommended the residents move into different apartments.
"This might be an internal issue," Schmoll said. "We will be interviewing a few more people this week."
The latest problems occurred on June 28, when SIUE Police received a call at about 2:45 p.m. from housing to report that the door to the apartment had been tampered with. The residents originally said there was nothing missing.
Later, one of the apartment's residents filed a report with police, saying clothing items were taken from her apartment.
The initial problems started June 17 when the same apartment was broken into, torn apart and valuables such as credit cards, jewelry, cash and electronics were stolen. This prompted an e-mail crime alert to warn students of the burglary.
The crimes continued when one of the residents of the apartment discovered money missing and a profane comment scratched into the apartment's front door.
Director of Housing Mike Schultz said the police were in charge of the case, and it was highly unusual.
"In all my years at SIUE, I've never seen anything like this (situation)," Schultz said.
The residents of the apartment could not be reached as of Monday.
SIUE Police asked anyone with information that may assist with the investigation to contact them at their non-emergency line at 650-3324.
