The 2008 SIUE volleyball roster expanded by three players with the signings of Kelley Farrell, Ashlee Brockenbrough and Brittni Birkey to national letters of intent.

Farrell, of Crystal Lake Central High School, comes to SIUE with a polished resume. As a senior, she earned All-American honors and led her team with 1,326 assists and 62 service aces. The Chicago Sun-Times honored her as "Best of the Best."

"I'm excited," Farrell said. "I think it's going to be a great experience, and I'm really looking forward to playing there."

Despite her success, the 5-foot-6-inch Farrell struggled to garner attention from other schools due to her lack of size. According to Gober, that is an oversight that is going to pay big dividends for the Cougars.

"She's a hardworking young lady," said SIUE head volleyball coach Todd Gober. "She is a fiery player with great leadership qualities - the kind of player that makes everyone around her better. I think she is just incredibly underrated."

One player who should benefit from Farrell will be Brockenbrough, who went to Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Mo. At 6-feet tall, Brockenbrough is a middle hitter who is athletic enough to play multiple positions, according to Gober.

"She is a really athletic and fast player," Gober said. "She is a hard worker with a tough but confident air about her."

Birkey transfers from Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind. She played two years for the Lancers before deciding to transfer to SIUE.
