Cougar Village apartment buildings 526 and 527 are currently out of power after a transformer exploded around 6:30 p.m. causing only damage to the transformer, according to JF Electric Foreman Randy Cox.

The electric company had the power turned off for the two apartment buildings around 11 a.m. because they were replacing a damaged transformer.

As the new transformer was being heated up, it exploded causing sparks, according to Cox.

Sophomore Aaron Eimer, who lives in apartment building 527, did not see the explosion because he was inside.

"It felt like a jar of the building," Eimer said.

Cox said he was not sure what caused the explosion, but the electric company will be working on it until it is fixed.

The power could be restored to the apartments in three to four hours, but Cox said 526 and 527 residents should consider finding another place to stay for the night.

The power is supposed to be back on around 8:30 p.m. as reported by the Cougar Commons.

Cougar Village resident assistants could not comment on the situation.

No plan for relocation of 526 or 527 residents is known at this time.
