Celebrating nearly 50 years in publication, SIUE's literary magazine, the Sou'wester, will be having the Sou'wester Fest at 7 p.m. next Thursday in the Morris University Center's Maple-Dogwood Room in honor of its achievements.
Valerie Vogrin, prose editor of the Sou'wester, said the event will include former and current editors, contributors, special guests and friends.
Former assistant editor of the magazine Steve Davenport will be featured at the event. Davenport won the Pavement Saw Transcontinental Poetry Award for his book of poems, "Uncontainable Noise." His writing has appeared in "The Iowa Review," "Fiction International," "580 Split," "CutBank" and many other journals. He does writing in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction and literary scholarship.
Davenport earned his bachelor's and master's degree in English from SIUE and his doctorate in American Literature from the University of Illinois. He offered a few suggestions for those thinking of becoming writers.
"Beware of immediate gratification. Writing is slow work, something you would do even if there were no audience. Read a hundred pages for every one you write," Davenport said. "Your writing's unlikely to be shapely if your mind isn't. Work to make it feel like play."
Another writer who will be featured at the Sou'wester Fest is Kyle Minor. Minor's recent work has appeared in "The Gettysburg Review," "The Southern Review" and the Random House anthology "Twentysomething Essays by Twentysomething Writers." His fiction has appeared in the fall 2006 edition of the Sou'wester and a poem is expected to be in the spring 2008 edition.
"He's kind of a rising star," Vogrin said. "We are really proud of the fact that that's the kind of people we are publishing."
Minor, who writes fiction, essays, screenplays and poetry, said he enjoys being a writer.
"It's the best job in the world because you get to say the things that we polite citizens aren't supposed to say," Minor said.
