Dear David Whitacre,
On Oct. 2, 2007, you graciously fed us your free speech propaganda and dictionary definitions of such words as apathy. Well, after reading your article "Students to blame for writer's discontent" I checked my dictionary for apathy. However, while paging through, I came across another word. Complain-1.) To express dissatisfaction, pain, uneasiness, censure, resentment or grief; find fault; 2.) To tell of one's pains, ailments, etc.
After reading this, I thought to myself that you must complain the majority of your day. I tried to imagine what kind of thoughts must go through your head throughout the course of the day. "Sky, you are far to blue! I will write to the Alestle about this!" I realized that this might not be as ridiculous as it sounds.
Also, I hate to burst your flamboyant bubble, but newspapers can be a little bit entertaining as well as informative. Well, maybe not the Alestle, but they have made some jabs at entertainment and comedy. I am sick of seeing the Alestle put down for these attempts, such as "What if SIUE were an unrealistic village of fun, where everyone communicated by singing to music that played out of the clouds?" Or what about "Opium smoker gets pageant crown removed!" The Alestle gave it a shot, even if they came up short of entertainment. However, they tried and that is what is important.
Repeatedly, you mention how everyone is apathetic to writing in to SIUE's newspaper and speaking their mind about trivial events that mean something to them. Well, maybe not everyone has something to say to the student body... Especially, topics that range from a hippie who should not have her crown removed, to t-shirts being buried and when grave robbers come to harvest our belongings in the future they will think we were vulgar people by these strange shirt they find. To some people, writing about these things would be a waste of time.
What is truly important is all a matter of perspective though. Therefore, it is my perspective that ...if you feel I am apathetic to responding to your dribble, is not important to me.
What does matter to me is putting a bullet in between my ears rather than reading one more of your dry "liberal," peace, love and "Thespians can do it on stage without needing an adult" articles. Although, if I were to commit to a lead salad, there would be more oxygen, food, land and most importantly paper in this world for every other liberal like your self. That is a risk I am just not willing to take.
...If you were to entertain me or be creative in any way, in any of your articles, I may become apathetic to reading an entire article that you have written. I may even comment on it.

Amen! This guy took the words right out of my mouth! If bitching and complaining were a major, Whitacre would have a Doctorate in two weeks!

Rocca, you may want to go back and take a good look at that dictionary you so prominently wrote about: your letter is rife with typos and grammatical errors. (Continued…)

Rocca, you went a little bit TOO far here. This is one of the only kids that writes in to the Alestle, and you want him to shut up! Personally, I don't want someone like you to take his place either. (Continued…)

This kid wrote a pretty humorous article and Tony B. and "You used a dictionary??" want to put him down for it? I think that was the first time I have ever laughed at an edition of the Alestle. (Continued…)
