Students to blame for writer's discontent
Guest column
Issue date: 10/2/07 Section: Opinion
APATHY - 1.) release or freedom from passion, excitement, or emotion; 2.) absence or lack of feeling or emotion, absence or lack of interest or concern (Courtesy of Webster's Third New International Dictionary).
So, now that you have read the dictionary definition of "apathy," where do you fall? Are you one of the stoics, released from your own passions? Or, rather, are you one of the people who could just care less? Either way, stop whining and actually get up and get your voice heard!
Seriously, the apathy among the student body at SIUE is sickening. What do you mean you are not apathetic? We have issues ranging from offensive art pieces, changes in school regulations, parking services having a heyday with fines, underpaid and overworked employees, (what could be deemed) improperly spent school funds, controversy surrounding student organizations, controversies surrounding the world at large, I mean the list just goes on and on. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Nada.
Every once in awhile you might get someone who makes a bold statement, but other than that it's generally staff and guest writers (Gibson, Groves, Patrico, and myself) who are left to pick up the apathetic slack in our own student community.
I have to take a moment and applaud Britney Barr for her latest article. Girlfriend, way to go! You rocked out an awesome opinion about something that mattered, and not an article on what SIUE would be like as a musical (which, by the way, completely neglected the theater, music and dance departments). Bravo!
I guess it just doesn't matter, right? It's only a student newspaper. Sure, the articles can be bland at times. Sure, the sports section is slowly devouring the Arts & Entertainment section. Sure, the front page stories might be considered dry. But really, none of it matters. I mean, after all, it's only a student newspaper.
I wonder what the Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Daily Egyptian staff says about our newspaper. I bet they're have a gay ol' time laughing at the fact that there is one "crazy liberal" trying to get his voice heard and "mix things up."
You know what, don't consider it your right to judge the student newspaper if you're not even bold enough to get your own voice heard. Don't come up to me telling me I am wrong about my opinion, when you don't even have the … well, you know what, to get your own voice heard.
But hey, like I said, it doesn't really matter; I mean it's only our student newspaper.
Ho hum … I guess this "crazy liberal" is just going to have to represent the entire SIUE student body's opinion.
That works for me.
