In one corner stands Marilyn Monroe, posing for a picture with a young man in a tie-dye shirt. Across the room Elvis is standing next to a girl in a poodle skirt. Meanwhile, "Get Down Tonight" is blaring from a nearby speaker.

This Thursday, Residence Housing Association is hosting a homecoming dance for all SIUE students. The theme for the dance is "Dancin' Through the Decades."

Residence Housing Association President Emily Wilken said the theme corresponds with other events taking place on campus this year.

"We wanted to tie into the 50th anniversary celebration as well as go with the homecoming week theme, which is 'Roarin' Through the Decades,' so we thought it would be a fun time, with all the reminiscing going on around campus, to bring back things from different generations," Wilken said.

RHA member Emily Kreke said the dance will revolve entirely around the decades theme, with different dance tables divided into the decades.

"We're celebrating the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s," Kreke said. "We are going to have appropriate colors and decorations and pop icons from each decade, and we've also got trivia on each table. The DJ will also be playing music from each time period. We are also encouraging every one to come dressed as their favorite decade, so we should have a wide mixture of costumes and stuff."

RHA members have gone all out, making decorations and working to transform the Morris University Center's Meridian Ballroom into a decade flashback.

"There is going to be a silhouette or caricature of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis that people can take their pictures by," Wilken said. "Our committee has also worked very hard on making cardboard cut-outs of different objects from each decade. For instance, there's a jukebox for one decade, and a cassette tape for another one and so on."

In addition to the trivia and life-size Marilyn and Elvis, RHA will be offering refreshments and beverages to help recharge the all-danced-out students.
