Students, faculty and staff gathered together at noon Tuesday for a Sept. 11 reflective service sponsored by the Coexist Peacefully Organizers on the Stratton Quadrangle.
The short reflective service took place to "thoughtfully remember today the family and friends who have lost a loved one, and to reflect on peace and hope," Sr. Claudia Calzetta of Catholic Campus Ministries said.
Calzetta said that this service has "been happening every year on Sept. 11 since the tragedy occurred in 2001."
Members of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship stood at the podium and read inspirational quotes while the members of the SIUE community in attendance bowed their heads listening, remembering and reflecting on what happened six years ago.
A common question around the quad Tuesday was, "Where were you when it happened?"
Freshman nursing major Stephanie Johnson said she was in seventh grade on Sept. 11, 2001.
"I was in science when I found out, but I wasn't able to see any video of it until I got home," Johnson said. "I found out about the service happening today at Mass on Sunday night and decided to come."
Tiffany Avery, a member of Intervarsity and first year biology graduate student, read a quote by Thomas A. Kempis about peace during the service. She said she was just arriving to her high school in Springfield when she found out what had happened six years ago.
"I went to a Christian school, so by the time the second plane hit, everybody was together in the prayer room," Avery said.
Senior English major Hilary Pool, another member of Intervarsity, who read a quote by Martin Luther King during the service, said she was getting ready for school when she found out.
"We watched TV during biology and for the rest of the day," Pool said.
Fliers and bumper stickers were passed out before and after the service stating "Coexist Peacefully," which is a quote that Calzetta wants people to remember.
This semester is a "Peaceful Semester," during which students are encouraged to perform peaceful acts.
