Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Fernando Treviño announced Friday afternoon the seven SIUC faculty members who will review Southern Illinois University President Glenn Poshard's 1984 doctoral dissertation and 1975 master's thesis for evidence of plagiarism.
According to the university communications news release, Ramanarayanan Viswanathan, electrical computer engineering professor and SIUC Facutly Senate president, will chair the committee.
Also on the committee are Peggy Stockdale, psychology professor and Facutly Senate vice president; David Worrells, aviation management professor and Faculty Senate secretary; Spyros Tragoudas, electrical and computer engineering professor and SIUC graduate council chair; Brad Colwell, Department of Educational and Administration and Higher Education chair and graduate council vice chair; Lenore Langsdorf, speech communication professor and SIUC Faculty Association vice president; and library affairs professor Philip Howze.
"The members of this group are among the most respected faculty members on our campus," Treviño said in the news release. "Each is well known for their integrity, their scholarship and their commitment to the academic reputation of this university."
The committee will meet and review the dissertation and thesis, discuss them with Poshard, and offer suggestions on how to proceed after the review, the news release said.
Additionally, the SIUE Faculty Senate released a statement Wednesday addressing the plagiarism allegations against Poshard.
The statement says:
"The Faculty Senate of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has the utmost confidence in the ability of SIU to provide due process to any and all employees, regardless of position or length of service. We also have equal confidence in the clarity and appropriateness of those policies governing plagiarism and academic integrity already in place within the SIU system. Therefore, we await the outcomes of a comprehensive, unbiased, and independent review of the allegations of plagiarism brought against SIU President Glenn Poshard."
The announcement comes after SIUC's student newspaper, the Daily Egyptian, accused Poshard of plagiarizing his dissertation Thursday, Aug. 30. The DE received a tip from an anonymous source, and after investigation, said Poshard had up to 30 separate sections of unquoted information, or information which was not cited.
Additionally, the Chronicle of Higher Education released a story Monday, Sept. 10, accusing Poshard of plagiarizing parts of his 1975 master's thesis. The article said the Chronicle found several examples where text was allegedly lifted verbatim from various sources, without quote or citations.
