The Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees announced Monday afternoon that Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Fernando Treviño will appoint members of the SIUC academic community to review SIU President Glenn Poshard's 1984 doctoral dissertation for evidence of plagiarism.
"The most appropriate course of action for this matter is a review process, led by the senior leadership of our academy, consistent with our campus policy on academic integrity," Treviño said in a statement.
Treviño is expected to announce the members of the review committee before the end of the week.
"I am fully confident that this committee will make any necessary recommendations consistent with the highest academic standards of this institution," Treviño said in the statement.
Additionally, the Chronicle of Higher Education released a story Monday morning accusing Poshard of plagiarizing parts of his 1975 master's thesis. The article said the Chronicle found several examples where text was allegedly lifted verbatim from various sources, without quote or citations.
"The examples are considerably more minor than those found in his dissertation but suggest a similar cut-and-paste methodology," the article said.
In the same press release Monday afternoon, David Gross, SIUC executive assistant for government and media relations, said Poshard acknowledged the differences in his thesis and will look at them during his dissertation review.
"We have not seen the latest accusation, but the single press account of it confirms again that Dr. Poshard's underlying scholarship is not in question - that these are technical and stylistic differences of opinion that date back decades," Gross said in the statement.
The most recent plagiarism accusations come after the Daily Egyptian, SIUC's student newspaper, released a story Aug. 30 announcing they found up to 30 separate instances of alleged plagiarism in Poshard's 1984 doctoral dissertation.
