Eight separate vehicle burglaries in one parking lot were recently reported in a single day.

The break-ins occurred in the Woodland Hall parking lot on the night of Friday, Aug. 31, or the early morning hours of Saturday, Sept. 1.

"We think they happened after midnight," Lt. Kevin Schmoll of the SIUE Police said.

Among the items reported missing after the incidents were a laptop computer, stereo equipment, a flashlight, cash, a purse and a Social Security card.

According to Schmoll, a male resident of Woodland Hall apparently told a desk worker at the residence hall that he had witnessed a break-in. The resident then proceeded to his room and did not report the occurrence to the police.

"We're trying to find who this witness is so we can get some more information," Schmoll said.

In a separate incident, a person was arrested in the Woodland Hall parking lot. According to Schmoll, an officer questioned the individual after seeing him looking into vehicle windows at approximately 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28.

"There was no reason to be on campus, particularly in that parking lot," Schmoll said.

When questioned by the officer, Schmoll said the subject provided a false name. He was later identified as Kenneth Wayne Brown, 23, of St. Louis.

The license plates on Brown's vehicle, a silver 2006 Chevrolet Impala, were not registered in his name. The plates, from Missouri, were later reported as stolen.

Brown was brought to the station for questioning. Because charges could not be filed at the time, he was released. He was later charged by the Madison County State's Attorney with felony misrepresentation of vehicle identification and misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer, for providing a false name. His bond was set at $50,000.

"He is not in custody at this time," Schmoll said Thursday.
