After the first Student Senate meeting of the new semester, the student body remains without a vice president.
The vice presidential selection process began with Senator Rob Schmittling nominating Senator Dominique Majors for consideration, and Senator Majors nominating Schmittling in return. Each candidate delivered a brief speech regarding their qualifications for the position before a secret ballot was taken.
At the conclusion of the secret ballot, Organization Advisory Board Chair Ankur Patel announced neither candidate had enough votes to be elected vice president. Senator Jessica Glaspie motioned to table the election until the next meeting. The senate passed the motion with a vote of six for, four against delaying the election until the senate's Sept. 7 meeting.
"I think the senate is having some difficulty selecting one of their own," Student Body President Laurie Estilette said after the meeting adjourned. "On top of that, we had two senators who were absent today, and had they been here, I'm pretty sure we would have gotten the final vote."
As for other business, the senate had little discussion when it came to passing a resolution to eliminate "program funding during particular times." This resolution, sponsored by Senator William Krause, will prevent student organizations from receiving funding for events during the week of finals and on the Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding it. The senate may make exceptions for academic events, at its discretion, and the resolution also states that summer events will be excluded from this rule.
The senate also approved over $20,000 in program requests at this meeting. The first request, from Sculptors at Wagner, sought $4,692 to cover fees and lodging for its October Sculpture Walk and Banquet.
"It's a coup to have her," Sculptors at Wagner President Craig Courtney said. "It helps us greatly as students."
One program request that attracted some questions from senators was the request from the Student Art Therapy Association for $3,462 to host an event featuring Lani Gerity, a speaker who will, according to the program request, "present an evening lecture and day workshop describing her experiences and accumulated knowledge regarding the use of puppet making in narrative art therapy."
