Sigma Pi(g) Roast

Sigma Pi fraternity will host its fifth annual pig roast and luau Friday, offering free food, live music and inflatable amusement for anyone who attends.
"We've been doing this for four years now," Adam Hughes, president of the local chapter of the Sigma Pi fraternity, said. "It's something that we do to get recognized and stand out a little bit from other fraternities.
"We provide free food, free drinks and free music for the entire campus community - not just students, but also faculty and staff."
The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Thursday on the Stratton Quadrangle, and will last throughout the afternoon. It is a free event and open to anyone.
According to Sigma Pi Vice President Jason Clark, "we'll have chips, and Fitz's is giving us two root beer kegs."
Sigma Pi will also hand out leis and the headlining dish, pork. But don't look for a full-blown pig at the event, Hughes said.
"When we say pig roast, it's not going to be a pig on a stick on there," he said. "We're actually going to be serving pulled pork."
The event will feature a live DJ throughout the day, and the band Wrayven - formerly known as Fifty Fifty - performing between 1 and 2:30 p.m. and playing both original and cover songs.
Hughes said the event is an effort on the part of the fraternity to hold an "Altruistic Campus Experience," or ACE project, a program that the national Sigma Pi fraternity has adopted.
"Basically, ACE is an effort by Sigma Pi National to bring each chapter closer to its campus," Arnes Camo, Social Chair for the local chapter of Sigma Pi, said. The program is intended to provide free events on campus for students as a way of giving back to the campus community.
The fraternity will also host its fourth 5K Walk for Breast Cancer in October.

Our pig roast went great today! We gave out more than 1400 sodas as well as going through 125 lbs of pork. An excellant ACE project and perfect way to start off the semester for the Delta-Omega chapter. (Continued…)

It's good to see fraternities holding positive events for charitable causes and proving that there's more to them than just barbaric hazing rituals. Kudos to Sigma Pi. (Continued…)
