The SIUE women's team will start their season on Sunday in a non-conference match-up against Newberry. The Cougars, who finished last season with a record of 12-5-3 overall and 8-3-2 in conference play, are projected to finish third in Great Lakes Valley Conference competition this year.
The Cougar starting 11 may not be decided until game time. With a talented crop of returning players, as well as a strong incoming class, women's head coach Lynda Bowers discussed how her starting roster is still not finalized.
"We're still sorting out our lineup," said Bowers. "We're going to see which combinations are most effective."
Some key contributions could from returning players, including seniors Katie Yearian, Sara Stroud, Jen Kratzer and Kim Roady. Roady combined with Cougar goalkeeper Kaci Backs recorded nine shutouts last season.
With a defense-orientated mind, Bowers has high hopes for the teams last year in NCAA Division II play. As the team reclassifies to D-I play, Bowers hopes to make a final impression with the GLVC.
"We're hoping to do something we've never done before," said Bowers. "And that's win the conference championship."
The Cougars will open their season against Newberry at noon Sunday at Korte Stadium. The Cougars will begin their GLVC play against Kentucky Wesleyan Friday, Sept. 7.
