The Edwardsville Block Party, originally scheduled for Friday evening, has been canceled due to inclement weather.
"The police department said that there was a tremendous storm coming with large hail and strong winds," SIUE Greg Conroy, SIUE Spokesman, said. "There was also tornadic activity with lots of lightning."
The committee organizers called several local communities to see how bad the storms were, Conroy said. Several of the communities reported large hail, winds up to 80 mph and lightning. Officials in Florissant also reported two storms and a clearing for about 30 minutes between storms.
Even if the storm manages to clear before the event is scheduled to begin, Conroy said that there is no point in attempting to allow the event to go on as scheduled.
"Let's say we have sunny weather at six," he said. "By the time we reset everything, it will be nine or 10."
Conroy said that those involved were disappointed by the cancellation, since they worked all day setting up.
"It's the eighth annual, and we've never been rained out," he said. "We decided to err on the side of safety."
