School of Business provides Wall Street Journal for students

School of Business professor Clay Williams did not begin his first CMIS 342 class of the fall with a simple roll call and syllabus review - he broke students into groups and had them analyze an article from the Wall Street Journal.

This could become the norm for instructors teaching business classes now that SIUE's School of Business has launched a pilot program to provide business students with free copies of the print edition of the Wall Street Journal and free access to the online edition.

"Business professionals out in the field get the Wall Street Journal delivered to their desk and read it every day," Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of the School of Business Janice Joplin said. "This is an important part of that socialization to become a business professional, and we feel like it's one more thing that we can provide to students that will help them to be really informed when they go out on job interviews."

Though the agreement this year will only provide 200 hard copy issues and 400 online accounts for business students, Joplin said that if the program is successful the department will work to secure the funding to make the Wall Street Journal available to all business students in upcoming years.

While the hard copies are being distributed on the second and third floors of Founders Hall on a first-come, first-served basis, the online accounts have been distributed to business students in certain classes. Students in both sections of CMIS 342, Information Systems for Business, have been granted access to the online edition, Joplin said.

This is good news for Williams, who plans to use readings from the paper frequently in his classes.

"I think that the Wall Street Journal and other business periodicals are a fabulous resource because it exposes our students to the things that people in business are reading," he said, adding that the Journal also helps students to learn to communicate in business terms and to better understand business systems.

The Wall Street Journal is a daily newspaper that reports news regarding the world of business, from profiles of leaders of individual companies to the daily trading activity of the stock market. The paper is published by Dow Jones & Company Inc. and is based in New York City.
