Students are a part of the SIUE community, but they are members of another as well.

The city of Edwardsville will welcome back students Friday in party fashion at the annual Edwardsville Block Party.

The Campus Activities Board will be hosting the block party in downtown Edwardsville on the 100 block of St. Louis St. next to the Madison County Courthouse. The party begins at 6 p.m. Friday and will last until midnight.

All SIUE students, faculty and staff are invited, as well as the entire Edwardsville community. In the past, many members of the SIUE community have turned out to welcome the new fall semester and enjoy the hometown festivities.

"We had approximately 3,500 people last year and expect to have about the same number of people this year," Michelle King, assistant director of Kimmel Leadership and the Block Party event coordinator, said.

According to King, the party will give new SIUE students a chance to learn more about the downtown Edwardsville area and a chance to have some fun.

The event will feature a disc jockey from 6 to 8 p.m., and then the headliner, St. Louis area cover band Smash Band, will take the stage.

Some of the other festivities included are food from area restaurants, beverages, inflatable games, a mechanical bull, airbrush painting and much more.

Students living in SIUE housing will not have to circle the parking lots in hopes of a vacant spot Friday night. CAB will provide shuttle services to all four residence halls and Cougar Village directly to downtown Edwardsville.

The shuttle will stop at the Bluff Hall, Prairie Hall, Evergreen Hall and Woodland Hall crosswalks at 5:45 p.m. and will make regular returns every 15 minutes.

For Cougar Village residents, the shuttle will pick up at the Madison County Transit bus stops at parking lots 3, 5H/5I, 4F and on Cougar Drive at lot 4A. The shuttle will begin transportation at 5:45 p.m.

Shuttles will also return students to campus. The last shuttle leaves downtown Edwardsville at 12:20 a.m.
