A portion of the Science Building was evacuated for around 20 minutes Tuesday when a beaker exploded, resulting in a small fire in a basement lab directly behind the auditorium.
No one was injured and the fire was quickly extinguished. The scene was investigated by the Edwardsville Fire Department, which responded to the alarm within minutes.
"In one of the labs downstairs, they were sterilizing the beakers, and one of the beakers caught fire," said Captain Ron Schrage of the Edwardsville Fire Department. "They tried to put it out with their lab coat. The lab coat caught on fire, and they put it out with a fire extinguisher."
A Building Services worker on the scene commented that the fire was potentially dangerous because of the quantity of flammable chemicals stored within the Science Building and chemistry labs.
