SIUE will hand over diplomas to 556 students at the end of the summer term, but only 240 students will be participating in the pomp and circumstance.

The ceremony, which will include all schools together, is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, in the Vadalabene Center.

During the fall and spring semesters, there is usually more than one commencement ceremony.

"Summer's a little bit smaller and usually one ceremony," Career Development Center Director Jean Paterson said.

Keith Alper will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award at the ceremony. Alper, a 1984 SIUE mass communications?graduate, is the chief executive officer and co-founder of Creative Producers Group, Inc. He has served on advisory boards for the department of mass communications and the School of Business.

Jacqueline Darnell from the College of Arts and Sciences is the student speaker.

Mass Communications professor emerita Barbara Regnall will receive the Great Teacher Award.
