Brown to develop diversity
Issue date: 7/25/07 Section: News
Vanessa Brown, the new assistant provost for faculty development and diversity, hopes to incorporate all aspects of diversity at SIUE.
"SIUE needs to approach diversity inclusively," Brown said, "not just as race or gender."
Brown is a professor and the chair from the Social Work Department. Brown has been with SIUE for 12 years and received her full professorship last fall. She does not plan to continue teaching while in her new position.
The internal search for the assistant provost position began at the end of the spring semester. The position opened up after previous assistant provost Rudy Wilson retired.
Brown said she applied for the position because she has seen firsthand how the faculty diversity program works.
"I thought it would be a wonderful experience," Brown said.
Brown said she hopes to bring commitment and act as an example of someone who has been on the faculty track.
"I want to give life to the notion of inclusiveness," Brown said.
Brown plans to start faculty communities including faculty members from all departments and ranks.
The goal is to "come to understand what each individual brings to diversity," Brown said.
Brown was selected to replace Rudy Wilson, who retired in March after 38 years at SIUE.

Dr. Brown:
Congratulations on your new position and I wish you all the best in your diversity initiatives. I worked with Dr. Blankson on the Multiculturual Diversity Intiatives Assesment project while an undergraduate student there at SIUE and I also wrote a Resolution on Diversity while a Student Senator in 2004-2005.
