Patricia Kessen, secretary III for the TRIO programs of the East St. Louis Center, received the June employee of the month award.
"It was very unexpected," Kessen said. "I feel very honored."
The TRIO program is dedicated to motivating and supporting students from low-income households and first-generation college students. According to Kessen, the program, which targets area high school students, is an education opportunity outreach program.
Kessen's co-worker Sherri Keys and supervisor Richard Binder, director of the TRIO program, nominated Kessen.
"She is very hardworking and conscientious," Binder said. "She hates to sit. She is always active."
Binder added that Kessen helps with several other programs.
"She is always working on something and she thinks ahead," Binder said. "She has taken a lot of responsibility off of me."
Kessen, who has been working in the program for one year, said she is delighted to be working for SIUE.
"I work for a wonderful and exceptional staff and SIUE is one of the best places you could work for. I'm very happy here," Kessen said.
Kessen received a $25 gift certificate to the Morris University Center Bookstore, a plaque, a reserved parking spot for one month and two complimentary lunch coupons to the University Restaurant.
