Smart classrooms may not be smart anymore after a string of alleged thefts that occurred at the end of the spring semester.
Six cases of alleged theft in the smart classrooms totaled around $30,000 and occurred between April 26 and May 5 according to Captain Tony Bennett.
"The smart classrooms have high-tech equipment installed and are scattered throughout the campus," Bennett said, "They can't be locked in between classes because students and faculty need to get in to use the equipment."
The first alleged theft was a $2,200 LCD projector and a $125 DVD/VCR combination player from Lovejoy Library. The projector was sitting on a cart and was not mounted.
The second alleged theft was an overhead projector with a remote control from the Science Building. The value of the theft is unknown.
The third alleged theft was an $8,000 Sharp ceiling mounted projector from the Engineering Building.
The fourth alleged theft was a $6,156 Sharp ceiling mounted projector from Alumni Hall.
The fifth alleged theft was a $5,535 Sharp ceiling mounted projector from Founders Hall.
The sixth alleged theft was a $7,315 JVC ceiling mounted projector from Alumni hall.
To prevent future thefts, the university invested and installed tamper-proof/locking screws on equipment throughout the smart classrooms on campus.
As of Friday, no arrests have been made and all cases are still under investigation. Anyone with information can call SIUE police at 650-3324.
