Farshid etniko’s debut CD is the perfect study companion: harmonicas reminiscent of Toots Thieleman’s, the verve of the Gypsy-Kings, dancing fingers on the guitar like those of Paco de Lucia, teases of lolling Brazilian syncopations, and funky claves everywhere. Rhythmically and melodically diverse, “Nightmare in Heaven” will reach music connoisseurs and easy-listeners alike. Categorized as Latino-Jazz, Gypsy and Middle-Eastern music, the wide range of sounds that make up this album are sure to take you abroad. The group is comprised of Farshid Soltanshahi on the electric guitars and sitar; Ali Soltanshahi on Latin and Middle-Eastern percussions; Tim J. Duggan on bass and stick; and a graduate of the SIUE Jazz Performance Program, John Hale, on drums and percussion. Farshid etniko performed last week in the Morris University Center’s Goshen Lounge, to the delight of the student body. In the past, students and faculty, unable to resist the incantations, have even taken to the dance floor to try a few lively steps. Expect to see more performances by Farshid etniko on campus.

On the night life scene, upcoming performances are from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Aug. 31, at the Savannah Club and from 9 p.m. to midnight Sept. 1, at the Ritz Carlton, both in St. Louis. For further performance schedule information or to purchase “Nightmare in Heaven,” visit http://farshidetniko.com.
