High-speed rail to quicken trip home for students

A high-speed rail will replace the current Amtrak rail from St. Louis to Chicago, according to Rick Harnish, executive director of the Midwest High Speed Rail Association.

Harnish said the route will run on the same track that Amtrak currently uses. The train's speed will increase from 79 mph to 110 mph.

Source of power outages found, fixed

The power outages that blackened SIUE during the past month should no longer be a problem.

According to Ameren spokeswoman Victoria Busch, Ameren identified the problem triggering the outages as moisture build-up in the switchgear. The equipment should be in working order now.

Vice Chancellor of Administration Ken Neher addressed Student Government March 5 to explain what has happened and is happening with the recent campus-wide power outages.

Neher said the university could not allow its employees to work on the problem.

The SIUE Call Center is making more money this year than when it was outsourced from past years.

Josh Olmsted, assistant director of Annual Giving at the SIUE Call Center, said $160,000 is the highest total amount raised in the course of a year when the call center was outsourced to Eastern Illinois University.

Cheryl Heard, assistant director of Student Organizational development and long-time faculty member, was recognized for her achievements outside of the SIUE campus by the St. Louis Urban League March 8.

Heard has been a staple on the SIUE campus for the last 31 years, with roles as an educator, administrator and aiding in diversity training.

Softball splits in Arkansas

The SIUE softball team had to endure their share of nail-biters this past weekend at the University of Arkansas Tournament. The Cougars played four games in two days splitting the decisions evenly with two wins and two losses.

SIUE kicked things off against Louisiana Tech University early Saturday afternoon, collecting a close 7-5 victory.

Track continues success outdoors

Records fell and new personal records were set when the SIUE track and field team opened their outdoor season last weekend at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Cougars competed Friday and Saturday, gaining strong marks both days.

Day one was highlighted with accomplishments from both young and experienced Cougar athletes.
